Review by Darren Kerr
From Kelowna comes this guitar-heavy quintet who, judging from
their press kit, are one of the more popular Okanagan outfits.
I'm sure that their sound (gruff vocals married with Pumpkins-ish
solo tones) goes well with copious amounts of booze, but in the
studio realm, it comes off a bit hollow. Like flat root beer,
with all the taste but not much fizz.
The closest comparison to vocalist Rod Dixon's voice is Spongehead's Dave Henderson, an aural charcoal, two-packs-a-day kind of voice. I find the punk rock of "Frayed" to be annoying, too arrrh, arrrh, arrrh for me. When the songs are given room to breathe, however, and the guitars of Toby Hulse and Brendan Stoneman can settle into a groove, as in "Mind of Me" and "Final Plea," then that is when Retrograde at least come close to living up to the hype.
