Review by Alphonse Leong
Sometimes I'm amazed at the lasting effect that Kurt
Cobain has had on the music scene. Not to say that Demolisten
Derby '97 winners Cripple are mawkishly imitative of
Nirvana (to
the extent of Bush,
for example), but I can't believe that this
disc's moody, raspy vocals and cryptic, edgy lyrics germinated
entirely outside of the Seattle spectre's influence.
To the band's credit, their approach to the bass/drums/guitar dynamic results in a hearty, clear sound that is quite unlike 'grunge.' The bass is more perceptible and the guitar has a warm, resonant quality. In fact, one track, "UME," has a pop feel that I was starting to get into, until some forced rhymes at the end pulled me out. And it's really only this earnestly world-weary lyric-writing that bugs me about this otherwise not bad CD.
