One look at where this came from (Nelson) and I started to get scared. I figured this to be more well-meaning socio-eco-political rhetoric over top of flaccid, white bread funk. And, well...

Sometimes the guitar riffs border on Eddie Van Halen-ish shuffles, other times funky Chili Peppers chords dominate. The vocals of Fraser and Alan Black fluctuate from bare-chested emotional wind to cod reggae to nasally funk "Insane in the Brain" type shit.

But it ain't that bad. And the musicianship is extremely competent, the bass playing of Ian Stewart in particular.

There definitely is a market for hippie funk rock, especially in Vancouver. People into People Playing Music, Noah's Great Rainbow and the Commercial Drive mentality will dig this. Me? It's a bit too straight and stilted. Not enough skunk in the funk.
