Review by Paul Watkin
Well, SNFU have come out with their first post-Wheat
Chiefs release and, though there are glimpses of power pop guitars
from the Belke boys, FYULABA is pure SNFU and a good punk
record. It carries strength through its honesty and straight-ahead
nature.
On this outing, Chi Pig chooses to sing about crabs, aging, and odd dreams of Dean Martin as a Martian, Michelle Pfeiffer in a diaper hunched over a roman candle and Tug McGraw with a baseball bat sticking out of his ass. Coming back to reality, he is joined by Bif Naked on "You Make Me Thick," a tune about bulimia and their shared disgust with the Kate Moss/supermodel fallacy.
Okay, lest I get too heavy here, musically it's straight out, rapid fire punk, with the boys laying back into the crunchy guitars to highlight the choruses and screaming out back-up vocals, which are appropriately noticeable on "Gaggle of Friends."
FYULABA is good and sincere and has some things to say (I especially like the irony in "Don't Have the Cow"). You'll have to check it out for yourself, though. Honesty is a rare thing in this cel-phone packin', poseur-laden, half-caf latté Vancouver town.
