Review by Alphonse Leong

43-second excerpt from "Sacred" (various formats)

Unfair as it may be, the "girl next door" cover photo gave me some preconceptions before I even opened this CD -- and I can't say they were too far off the mark. Yeah, Brock's got some vocal ability, and the disc's performance and production values are pretty high, but there's nothing to distinguish this six-song EP from tons of other demos circulating in the aspiring artist arena.

Three of the songs have a frighteningly similar sound: a forced and purified R&B groove with overbearing studio enhancements. The last cut, "In My Heart," is a slower, more organic piece that features some heartfelt phrasing, but, for the most part, though, there's a slick 'marketing project' feel to the disc, as if it was a merchandise sample rather than a selection of songs.

[ed. Question: why does a Vancouver singer have only Toronto contact info on her CD?]
