High Comedy has an alien feel to it, the production is metallic and distant -- yet somehow in your face -- and the vocals and guitars are flanged and phased to high hell. Martin Ferguson's voice has the versatility of a chameleon, sometimes sounding British glam à la David Bowie or Suede's Brett Anderson, and other times sounding operatic and even growly (but only for seconds at a time). For you folks who like guitar flights and dramatic chord changes, Ferguson provides that as well. Mention must be given to Ian Hood's excellent drumming, running the gamut from country to jazz to Keith Moon bombast.

It would be interesting to see how this music is performed live, as this recording is a two-man show. When Chiens d'Amours find their footing and develop their sound with a warmer recording, they could make inroads.
