Solid Ground

CD Cover Cello
Independent

Review by Rodney Gitzel

Cello isn't a band, but a singularly-named singer/songwriter/guitarist, supported on this record by nearly a dozen local musicians.

Musically, this disc is tight, controlled -- and boring. Not bad boring as much as inconseqential boring: it's MOR guitar pop that is quite well put together, but completely lacking anything to make you blink and think, "hey, that's kinda neat."

Lyrically, the disc is a little more interesting. Unfortunately, for every song like "Granville St." (bonus points for singing about Vancouver!), which seems to make some honest observations, or "Move Over," which has a nice vibe to it, there are a couple tunes like "29 Forever" ("I'm 29 forever / And into jeans and leather") to make you cringe. "Me and My Car" is a funky and sadly funny tune for those who've had their car broken into; but, as much as I think "Jennifer" to be an excellent name for a love song, this one is a bit (well, a lot) syrupy.

It's a frustrating disc, as this Cello fellow has a lot of talent for assembling songs. I'd like to see him tackle some more challenging material.
