Review by Darren Gawle

45-second excerpt from "Sex Ed" (various formats)

Every now and again you come across an album that stops you dead in your tracks and leaves you speechless. This self-titled release by Mary Magdalene (who also play locally as Lois Lane) is one of those albums, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. I'm dumbfounded by the appearance here of a group which truly scrapes the bottom of the barrel in terms of audacity. The music is really hard to describe, but recall any really over-the-top French Canadian blues/rock band you've ever seen on MusiquePlus and you're partway there.

Sorry if I'm bordering on nasty; but Mary Magdalene do their best to make this endeavour as difficult as possible with their blend of funk, blues, hard rock and Sass Jordan-on-testosterone vocals that hasn't been seen since... well, I can't recall any band that sounds like this which has ever been signed.

That's about all I can really say here without being truly slanderous. I'll just leave you with the opening lines of "Just Another Day": "Yesterday I saw three nuns in a cab/I wonder where they were going..."
