Review by Darren Kerr

45-second excerpt from "Happy Guy" (various formats)

Last year's Music West guide described this Saanichton band as quote unquote alternative. Alternative to what? Every song has elements of a different band -- 54-40, R.E.M., Lowest of the Low; hell, even Green Day and Everclear's more pedestrian moments are represented here. Simple songs, basic arrangements -- thankfully not depending on the now I'm quiet, now I'm loud framework. "Second-hand Smoke" shows sparks of Furnaceface-type humour, but too often this band's colour is beige. If you like any of the aforementioned bands, you might find some straw to cling to. Not my cup of gruel! Caveat Emptor.
