The Savage Sound

Review by Michael O'Donahue

45-second excerpt from "Gangster Rock" (various formats)

What's on Strong Like Tractor's mind? Dumptrucks, dealers, Armageddon, hives, trouble makers, women and... tractors, I guess. They've a refreshing lack of brooding, woe-is-me and I'm-angry-and-I-don't-know-why. These songs do what songs should -- they get your toes tapping and your head bobbing.

A close point of reference for the band's sound would be the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and there's nothing wrong with that. They don't sound too much like them, but I'll bet they've got all their records. Trashy guitar noise, distorto bass, and Lewis Tractor's yowling add up to F-U-N.

I admire a band that doesn't try to Tell Me Stuff. Strong Like Tractor write their songs, play them, entertain you -- and if that's not good enough, then the hell with you.
