Divine Industries

Review by Darren Gawle

45-second excerpt from Melt's "Elastic Gargle" (various formats)

Jason Grant has sure come a long way from his days slinging t-shirts at 54-40's merch table, and, along with the divine talents of Allen Moy, he brings us Divine Industries, one of Vancouver's newest independent labels, and a compilation featuring some of the more interesting bands in this city. No, don't start running for the hills just yet (I know, most releases termed "Vancouver Compilation" are invariably synonymous with the term "shit"), there are actually some things worth listening to here.

We get eleven tracks of variable quality, from DSK's ass-kicking "Cementhead" to Nefro's meandering (i.e. boring) "Bacteria Culture," from Melt's ripping "Elastic Gargle" through Flash Bastard's we-really-like-the-Ramones "C'mon" to the exquisitely-irritating "Divine Industries Jingle." Oh, plus there's local has-beens, the Sons of Freedom, as well as Veal, Hellenkeller and others.

Though few of the bands here are actually signed to "Div.Ind," Grant and Moy show that they can spot a winner (e.g. Ottobon, DSK, Veal...), and that's a good start by any standard.
